St. Louis County Library is a 21-branch library system with one of the most prominent genealogy departments in the nation. The library’s previous website was built on an outdated platform that made site navigation difficult and confusing, yielded poor search results, restricted the ability of staff to create appealing content, and was not responsive on smaller screens. The library system sought to be an irreplaceable community center and needed new online technology to achieve that goal.
A richer search experience to drive engagement
We moved the site onto Drupal’s open-source platform to provide flexibility and room for growth. A clean and visually appealing design simplified and streamlined the menu and navigation. The powerful bento-box style integrated search allows patrons to view search results from the library’s catalog, e-media, genealogy resources, databases, news releases, and events.
The library wanted to focus on their genealogy department, and making it easy for patrons to access the numerous events and classes the library provides. We guided staff as they migrated their vast genealogy resources onto the new site and helped make the genealogy department more accessible online. The events section allowed patrons to filter event listings by type, branch, and zip code, as well as to search by keyword. Age-group color coding further simplified the browsing experience.
